See also the [[/metric/all/|list of metrics]]. == Introduction A **metric** is a number measuring a particular facet of animal food production. By having many metrics, we can divide up concerns in a granular way. Any user can then combine these metrics to form new metrics according to their own preferences or values. There are currently two kinds of metrics: **basic metrics** and **derived metrics**. == Overview === Basic metrics A basic metric simply assigns a single numerical value to each type of animal food. The meaning of the number is up to the person who creates the metric, and should be explained in its description. === Derived metrics A derived metric is a formula that combines other metrics into a single number. The other metrics can be basic metrics or derived metrics, that is, any total metric. Metrics can be added, multiplied, weighed and averaged, exponentiated, and so on. A derived metric depends on other metrics, so if they are changed, say in response to new or updated information, the derived metric will change as well.
